TRANSFER TRAIL #2068
Trail Use: Moderate (Heavy during hunting season)
Length: 12 miles
Beginning Elevation: 5800
Ending Elevation: 10,800
Travel east from Rifle to the Glenwood Springs exit #116. Turn left toward West Glenwood Springs, continuing for 1.5 miles to the National Forest boundary sign. Turn right on Transfer Trail.
Travel is recommended during the day and in dry weather only. As you ascend the mountain top above Glenwood Springs, there are rocky areas that are very rocky and narrow. At the top, the road becomes very rutted and rocky.
There are numerous lakes and good views of Glenwood Springs and the Colorado River Valley within the first six miles of the trail. Windy Point, which is about 8 miles up the trail, offers a great view of “No Name Creek”. There are several roads in the area that branch off and lead to nearby lakes. Forest Road #623 branches off the trail about 15 miles north, going east past Grizzly Creek Cow Camp to the Coffee Pot Road (#600). FYI: You can return to Glenwood Springs by turning right to Heart Lake and continuing on the Coffee Pot Road (#600) to Dotsero. You then head west on I70 to Glenwood Springs.
