From the Saint Vrain Mountain Trailhead, the Saint Vrain Mountain Trail  starts off on an old road and enters the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The trail cuts across the slope and follows along a creek and follows some switchbacks before it ascends above tree line, passing to the south of Meadow Mountain. It pops briefly into Rocky Mountain National Park. This section of trail is not open to pets. The trail circles the west side of a small peak, gaining the east ridge of Saint Vrain Mountain (no developed trail ascends the peak). At 3.9 miles, it intersects the unsigned Rock Creek Trail near the Saint Vrain Mountain Trail’s highest point. This junction is marked by a cairn, and is south of the head of the Rock Creek drainage. Saint Vrain Mountain Trail continues down the south side of Saint Vrain Mountain to intersect Buchanan Pass Trail.

Permit Info: This trail lies within the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area:

  • Camping permits required for all overnight trips between June 1 and September 15. Overnight permits cost $5 per group, per trip from June 1 through September 15.
  • Organized groups are required to have a permit for both camping and day-hiking year round. Day-hiking permits are free.

Restrictions: Indian Peak Wilderness restrictions apply:

  • Motorized and mechanized vehicles are prohibited.
  • Pets must be on a hand-held leash at all times. Dogs are prohibited on the portion of this trail that enters briefly into Rocky Mountain National Park.
  • Campfires prohibited.
  • Campsites must be at least 100 feet away from water and trail.
  • Group size is limited to 12 (people and livestock combined).

Fishing and hunting: permitted in accordance with regulations established by the Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

Directions: In Allenspark, take County Road 107 (Ski Road) south for 1.5 miles. National Forest System Road 116.1 heads up the hill to the right for 0.5 miles to the Saint Vrain Mountain Trailhead. Parking is limited.

Day Hiking

This trail is within the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. It climbs up and over the shoulders of Meadow and Saint Vrain Mountains, passing briefly through a corner of Rocky Mountain National Park. South of Saint Vrain Mountain, the trail drops into the Middle Saint Vrain Creek valley.

Fire Information  Campfires are prohibited year-round.
Elevation desc The trail climbs 1,300 feet in 3.5 miles from Saint Vrain trailhead to the highest point, then drops 1,500 feet over the next three miles.
