Lizard Head Trail #505
The 7.7 mile trail provides access into the Lizard Head Wilderness. The trail begins at Lizard Head Pass, offering a popular day hike/horseback ride as it rolls gently through a mature aspen and spruce-fir forest for 1.5 miles before ascending toward the Black Face Ridge. The trail ultimately descends into Bilk Creek Basin, following the creek until it intersects with the Wilson Mesa Trail #421. There are several outstanding views of waterfalls along Bilk Creek. The Lizard Head Trail and Cross Mountain Trail #637 offer a classic 9-mile loop. Trail users typically shuttle a vehicle to either the Lizard Head Trailhead or the Cross Mountain Trailhead located two miles southwest of Lizard Head Pass along State Highway 145. The route climbs to a high point of 12,000 feet, offering spectacular views of prominent 13,113-foot Lizard Head Peak.
