The Coal Creek Basin Trail #703 is a good day use trail for wildlife and scenery opportunities. It offers trail loop options in open pinyon/juniper/oak forest. The trail gains close to 3,000 feet in elevation from the lower to the upper trailhead and climbs at a steady uphill grade.

Travel southeast from Grand Junction on Highway 50 for about 12 miles to its junction with the Lands End Road. Turn left and travel east on the Lands End Road for 2.7 miles to the Purdy Mesa-Kannah Creek Road turnoff. Turn right onto this road and travel 0.1 miles until the road splits. Turn onto the right fork and continue east on the Kannah Creek Road, FSR #109, for approximately 6.9 miles as it crosses a bridge and a parking area on the right and eventually the water tenders house and begins to swing back in a western direction. The Lower Coal Creek Basin Trailhead is located on the right, north side of the road.

The upper trailhead of the Coal Creek Basin Trail begins by forking south off of the Coal Creek Trail, approximately 4 miles east of the Wild Rose Picnic Ground.  Since the Switchback Trail is shorter and ties into the Coal Creek Trail just above the Coal Creek Basin Trailhead, it is the easiest and quickest access route to this location.

From the Highway 65, turn west onto the Lands End Road, FSR #100, travel for 7.6 miles to the Upper Switchback Trailhead.  This trailhead is located on the south side of the road, ten feet west of a cattleguard.  Hike down the Switchback Trail #705 for approximately 1 mile until it ties into Coal Creek Trail #702. Turn left (south) on the Coal Creek Trail and continue hiking slightly downward for approximately 200 yards until reaching the Coal Creek Basin Trailhead.
